BRITISH CYCLING PREMIER MOUNTAIN BIKE SERIES ROUND 5, CHECKENDON, SEPT 16 2006
(Report by Joolze Dymond taken from the British Cycling website)
What a great series finale. Not even the dull drab weather could cast a cloud on the final round of the Premier Mountain Bike Series. With plenty of action and all to play for in some of the categories there were surprises and upsets all through the day.
Despite many competitors negative responses when they first found out the final deciding round of the NPS was to be held at Checkenden, a venue not used for NPS for at least 3 years, when the racing was done and dusted most were happy with the venue choice. The course comprised 5.9 miles of dry hard flinty singletrack that swooped and flowed in and out of the trees. With very few passing places, a good start was an all-important ingredient for success - that and a pair of very sturdy tyres! Many competitors' races were brought to an early end as the course inflicted numerous punctures and shredded many tyres. Also the unrelenting nature of the course made more than one competitor, 'blow their doors off' before the end of their races. Boy it was a toughie!
Jodi Vickery continued in her dominance of the master women's series, underlining her series win with another race win. Joanne Henderson took a well-deserved 2nd, whilst Kate Betts took 3rd. Sarah Carter disappointed not to ride due to illness picked up 2nd overall, whilst a consistent Henderson took 3rd.
Riders comments:
Jodi Vickery - Very pleased. Today, although I had the series in the bag anyway, I still wanted to prove to myself that I am a good all rounder, with my 4th win. I had Lydia Gould on my tail to keep me on my toes through the singletrack, which was good. Looking forward to a rest now.

Wayne Bennett .
Wayne would like to thank Jez who very kindly lent, yes lent his spilt link chain to him on the 2nd lap!!
Let me elaborate, Wayne was riding strong until braking his chain on his 2nd lap. As he waited aimlessly for the next rider for a chain tool it happened to be a local race pal with no chain tool but knackered legs who gave up his chain??
Therefore Wayne managed to finish but is hoping for a better season next year as he has had his fair share of misfortunes this year.
Maybe he needs a better mechanic!!29/07/2006
It was the day they went up a mountain and came down a hill and every single rider earned the right to be regarded as a champion though, of course, only a select few earned the right to wear the National Champion's jersey.
The setting for this year's National Cross-Country Championships was Moelfre, near Oswestry, the setting for the Hugh Grant film, "The man who went up a hill and came down a mountain'. I guess the irony of this was lost on most of the riders as they faced the punishing climb that was the backbone of a short but extremely testing course.
An undeniably beautiful setting, Moelfre was untested as a Cross-Country course and despite some good intentions, such as cutting a route parallel to the fire road, plus a loop of new singletrack, the decision was made to use tracks already in place and bedded in. This included a single steep and challenging climb, up a loose and dusty fire road, then a quick right turn to a technical descent, which was over in a flash. A quick burst round the campsite to pass the feed station then it was off again and another 2.9miles in hot, challenging conditions.
As in this year's national series events, the competition in the Master women's race was between Jodi Vickery and Sarah Carter. Despite reservations on her practise lap, Vickery rode a strong race, relishing in the harsh terrain. Nailing the tricky descent each time enabled her to keep her lead constant. Carter chased hard but could not get on terms and took silver.
Wayne Bennett in the Master Men Category started well maintaining a strong 12th position. Unfortunately as many did he punctured at the top of the main climb on the 2nd lap. He had problems getting air in the new tube which delayed him a little longer so he hammered the last couple of laps finishing in 17th position.
Riders comments:
Jodi Vickery - Master women's winner
I got a good start straight off the line, which I was pleased about. I kept it pretty calm I knew that there was a lot of climbing involved so I just tried to keep my head about it. The technical descent was absolutely brilliant so much better in race conditions rather than when I did the practice run yesterday where it was a bit hit and miss. Managed to ride it all smoothly, managed to stay on and in control and yeah would quite have liked to have gone round again actually. Really pleased to get the jersey I shall be wearing it to bed tonight as well!!
Sarah Carter - Silver master women
Great race, very, very hard climb, loved the descent. Jodi was just going strong on the day, so very well done to her.

Premier Mountain Bike Series Round 3-RACE REPORT.....
Drumlanrig, July 8 2006
Round 3 of the increasing popular Premier Mountain Bike Cross-Country Series popped North of the border to the birthplace of the bicycle-Drumlanrig.
The event arena at this venue is overlooked by a grand Jacobean Castle, whilst the racing takes place in the extensive grounds and Estate. With the National Championships just around the corner, it was inevitable that a few familiar faces might be at home, giving this one a miss, but numbers certainly weren't lacking with an influx of entries from Ireland and Scotland to add to the mix.
For those that made the journey, the rewards were high: tantalising singletrack, technical highlights (and for some lowlights), fast flowing forest tracks and, for a while, hardly a hint of mud. The testy 5.6 mile course included some 'signature' sections, including the fast fire road climb out of the arena and dramatic descent back at the end of the loop. All - in - all, it was a course to test the best.
Jodi Vickery and Wayne Bennett riding for 'Dirty Jo' Bikes of Dont Push It made the long journey to endure the race, with Jodi in a series lead in the Master women Category it was a must to keep up the points. She blist the course taking another win making her 8 points overall in the standings lead.
Wayne still recovering from injury took it in his stride for the first 3 laps, when just getting in to it punctured half way through the last and unsuccessfully repaired having to walk back to the arena.
All in all though a good weekend and excellent course.27/06/2006
Dont Push It Cycling Club Bude held it's first event on Saturday 25th June.
A 10 mile 'fun' time trial from the shop around the Widemouth coast road and back along the main A39 to the club headquarters for a barbeque.
It was a great sunny warm dry day and proved to be popular with a good turn out from club members young and old.
Competitors raced in two separate categories, one for the mountain bikes and the other for the roadies!!
The competition heated in a tightly contested race of some very close and fast times.
The mountain bike category was won by dirty jo team rider Adrian Bellew with Ashley Starr in 2nd and Neil Hutson in 3rd.
The road category was won by a last minute entry from Wayne Bennett still recovering from injury, with James Marshall in 2nd and Lee Bradley in a very close 3rd.
The committee would like to thank all that took part and helped out to make it a very enjoyable and successful day.24/06/2006
The Team was Born.......
We decided to create our very own 'dirty jo' team for the South West winter xc series the 'Soggy Bottom' held at Newnham Park, Plymouth.
The five round series seems to be getting bigger and better every year, and is now attracting more and more riders from all over the country as british cycling are now awarding ranking points for the series.
The team thing is a good idea as well as you can enter as many riders as you want and the top 3 results achieve points at each round, after the five rounds the most points in a team wins the series.
We seem to of built up quite an interest in the Bude area as far as the mountain bike scene is concerned, and not only did we want to get our brand out on the race course we wanted to keep the motivation of the riders up through the winter months.
The lads and lady were keen to get there new printed team jerseys on (www.dirtyjobikes.co.uk The Full Creme hand built in Cornwall!!).
And attend the first round on November 13th..........
Why not come along and support the team or even have a go yourself.
Other race dates:
January 2nd 2006
February 12th
March 12th
April 9th
The Team:
Wayne Bennett:
The dirty jo founder himself. A lean but mean racing machine!
Category:Master.
Jodi Vickery:
The dirty jo in the flesh. Likes to play dirty on the race course, but don't be fooled by the tinyness.
Category:Elite Women
Mark Trewin:
The extremist, dabbled in triathalons, but not scared of the mud, when push comes to shove he's your man.
Category:Master
Adrian Bellew:
From motor to mountain bikes, he don't need no engine, just his dirty jo.
Category:Veteran
Ashley Starr:
Keen and ready to attack, the black widow on the course, watch your back.

Premier National Points Series
Round 2 Margam Park Wales
RACE REPORT:
The sun shone and tempertures rose at the beautiful rhododendron setting of Margam Park. Throwing a testing 5.5 mile challenging lap to over 1000 racers.
Waiting around in the arena area until 3pm for our race start was not the greatest incentive. The racers faces told the story as they passed the feed area for more fluid and energy supplies to endure another lap of extremely steep climbing and challenging technical descents. The tree canopies made air circulation very minimal at times, and yet just as demanding on the open fire road climbs as the sun bore in to your body.
The technical singletrack was dry and dusty rolling in places, but a few body battering rutty sections, stoney descent to finish the lap gave no let up in the legs and body itself.
The nature of the course soon spilt the field of racers from the start. With a river crossing and immediate testing climb out was only good for a cool down.
There were a few stodgy patches to keep you on your toes and a climb you could barely walk and push your bike let alone ride!!
But we loved it!!??
Wayne in a field of 47 master men was set off just before my category. As I watched them speed down the tarmac start and turn off into the first section of singletrack I knew my time was near as I was called up to the gridded start line.
In a field of 13 Master Women I had a lead start and was beginning to panick, all was to good to be true.
But by the third and final lap of an extremely tactful race I had been in fourth, third, and second and quads were tight as, I felt anyone out on a Sunday leisure ride with the family would of passed me on that last climb. Having spoken to my fellow competitors and looking at lap times drop off I wasn't alone.
Little did I know as I weaved in and around the race tape in the arena to then finish my race I had come 1st!!
Poor Wayne was still out on his last lap. But he had a really good race also as it was an extremely strong field of men, he came 20th.
Check out the British Cycling Website or xcracer.com for photos and race reports.06/06/2006
Saturday 6th May 2006
The first round of the premier series in mountain biking was a big hit with around 800 riders making it the biggest race event so far this season. Competitors not only travelled from all over the country to compete in this national race but there were many from all around the continent.
It was not either of our choice of courses due to the flat nature of Sherwood Pines Forest Park in Nottingham, but don't get me wrong fantastic venue and fun course to ride.
The weather forecast the day before was terrible so packed raincoats, wellies and umbrella only to be greeted with sunshine and 19 degrees on arrival.
After our 5.5 hour journey up the motorway, loosened our legs with a leisurely practice lap around the 7.7mile lap.
Very dry, dusty and even a few sandy situations to keep you aware. Not the most interesting course ridden at ease but proved differently in the race situation.
Both Wayne and I were to be set off around 3pm.
Wayne was caught unaware at the last minute and had to make a quick trip to the porta loo. Hence he was then at least 10 deep in riders for the start line with 65 in the Master field. It sounded like he had a similar battle as I did between other riders of similar ability. It was just a flat out race with no room for errors. Keeping the power down on the open tracks was imperitive. And the twisty tight singletrack sections were flowing and fast with a few berms and sandy corners to keep you on your toes. But at far as climbs well blink and you'd miss them, well we would anyway with the terrain we're use to riding. So it was a real roadie course, I think Wayne's average speed over the 4 laps was 16 mph.
He was pleased with his result as in the past both of us have struggled on such flat courses. He came 32nd in a highly competitive masters field.
My first year in the Master Women category and a lap less which I wasn't keen on as I like a longer race.
But it certainly made me work hard over the 3 laps I did have as I knew I had no time to waste. Especially with one of my rivals on my back wheel for the best part of 2 laps. I lost her in the end and gradually closed the gap on another who was in third place. I just ran out of time could of done with that extra lap. But was only about 20 seconds behind her.
So pleased with that result as the winner of my category is an ex-pro road racer and the lady in second has been racing all over the continent.
So bring on the climbs!!06/06/2006
Sunday28th May 2006
Blazin Saddles Round 1
Haldon Park Exeter.
Race Results:
A surprisingly dry fast course a demanding 3.5 mile lap a classic cross country course involving one big climb and one long technical descent.
The dirty jo guys put in a brilliant effort with some great results too.
Josh came 9th in the Youth Category.
Wayne came 3rd in the Master Men.
Adrian came 7th in the Veteran Men.
Mark was having a good one until he got a little over friendly with the natural woodland embedding his knee in to a stone!?
He was taken up the forest track in the ambulance and a plaster was applied!! All is well.
Come and support the dirty jo team for round 2 on Sunday June 25th.21/04/2006

Been busy working, racing and training so have'nt had time to put my weekly lowdown report up.
Poor excuse I here you say.First of all well done to all our riders for a good winter race season and a great soggy final round in dry sunny weather for a change. A big well done to Josh for his best result to date and keeping his bike in one piece.

Report: Monday 9th April 2006
Race Soggy Bottom 5 The Final, Sunday 9th April 2006...............It was debateable on weather and course conditions as the final of the Soggy Bottom Series loomed ahead. April had sprung but Spring still hadn't.
But the sun shone all week prior to the event and even on the day!!
It was to be a flat out sprint around the fast flowing singletrack, dry stoney fire road climbs and sheep track grass field crossings.
Oh but come on we still had to cross the roaring raging river on every lap, in which if not hit hard enough you were stopped in your tracks by the force of the water, and too hard you ran the risk of hitting something in the depths and falling in. Hence I had a good dunk each time around, whick was good to wash off any mud I had managed to pick up on the way around from the remainding stodge or muddy puddle that still hadn't had chance to dry.
In fact the last wooded section proved quite technical as the tree roots were quite slippery due to the trees shading the sun from drying it out.
So it was quite a race, no time for mistakes, the previous categories were lapping in about 15 minutes and we only had 4 so we knew it was only an hour race or so.
I think every one was quite stunned as they came in to the race arena realising that was the end of there race.
It was intense to say the least.
Wayne played his usual game in the Master category leading the pack out, and staying on this time!! Maintaining 2nd position for the first 3.5 laps and then being pipped at the last minute, but still pleased to of come 3rd also keeping his overall series postion of 3rd.
There was some good women competition for me this time and I held first for the first lap, but lost time later after loosing my chain and doing several laps of the river each time around. I came 2nd in the expert women but still managed to keep my series win overall.
There was a bit of close competition between us dirty jo team members and Adrian and I were pretty close throughout. Adrian came 8th in the Veteran men.Ashley was 18th and Brett 22nd in the Master Men.
Josh kept himself and bike in one piece and enjoyed his first dry race placing 10th in the Youth.
Nice to see some more local lads having a go for the last one. Well done to Stuart Mitchell placing 27th in the Master Men and Mike Miller 5th in the Open Men.Overall great series, excellent team effort and results.
As for the overall team results for the series this is unknown at present but will keep you updated.

Twas the Monday prior Soggy that my true love said to me, what a lovely day for a ride.
But by Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday as the turbo trainer spun, that was merely a pun.
Friday and Saturday despite the sun the damage was sure to of been done.
Wipers full speed temperature gauge 4dg, why not turn around I'm sure he'd agree.
But no with series points at stake, and already 1 round dropped it had to be done..........
We arrived in time to cheer Josh racing in the Youth category. Not only had he had to resort back to flat pedals and trainers, having lost a cleat out of one shoe prior to the start. He also managed to lose his saddle on lap 2 but slogged it out for the final 4 mile lap with no saddle. He placed an overall 16th with the rest of his ice creme in one piece.
Watching the riders was enough to put any one off even attempting to be the next victims to endure the course.
The rain eased by the time the main categories were on the start line but it was still extremely cold.
We managed to cruel out of the van for a 10 minute warm up.
All the remainding categories were sent off together and this was to be a challenge in itself.
As I heard the clashing of metal, screeching of brakes I knew that some riders had come down quite hard on the open fire road.
Fortunately I took the right hand line around the ranting riders as they scrambled back to their feet. The only concern was the familiar voice and language that was coming from one particular crash victim. It was Wayne.......
Not only did he come off once off the start but as he sprinted to make up the time he had already lost he took down another rider on his way. It was Clare a fellow rider from Bude.
But as the fury fired him to the extreme he managed to work his way up through the riders being the last one to actually start his race he had alot to make up.
Family and friends spectating could not believe there eyes as Wayne eventually came up through to come 3rd in the Master Men.
Having not spoken to the other guys I can only go on results, of which were all good.
Ashley and I had a sprint to the finish, but I just crept in front at the last minute. Ashley came 10th and I came 1st in the Expert Women. Mark had a battle as I know mud is not his forte but still placed a very respectful 13th.
Adrian had a good one in the Vets just missing a podium and coming 4th.
Nice to see a few more locals having a go, well done to Richard Smith and Steve Channing.
The final round on April 9th with a few hopefuls for series positions, lets hope spring will have sprung by then!

Soggy Bottom Round 3
Sunday 12th February 06.......
What great riding conditions it has been but when Wayne mentioned semi-slicks I knew it was tempting fate. With round 3 of the Soggy Bottom series on the horizon and everyone fired up raring to race I knew something had to change. As I lay awake on the Saturday night with a bit of the pre-race jitters, that unfamilar pitter patter of rain drops on the window kicked in. I knew we would be in for a few puddles........
Puddles well that was a bit of an understatement as I watched the youth and juvenille categories stumble over the finish line bikes clagged with mud and faces done like war paint I knew we were in for a battle.
The dirty jo team were out in there half dozens, off the start line as if dosed with rocket fuel, don't know what the team manager had said before hand, but what ever it was they were on a mission.
The 3.5 mile lap of off road climbs descents and singletrack just got claggier and glue like over the 4 laps that we all had to endure.
Desperatly trying to find that dry patch to rest the legs, but know such luck it was a challenge in itself to stay upright on the bike and keep control. I can tell you as I frantically clipped out my foot to save myself from an embarrassing stack, and that was just in the arena area!!
Picking the right lines was vital but even that was impossible in the end as racers tyre tread grooved through the mud making it even harder to keep riding consistent.
We all lived to tell the tale and had a really good day out and some excellent results.
I came 1st in the Expert women.
Wayne had a hard race eventually taking 3rd in the Master Men.
Mark moved up through the placements and came 17th with Ashley not far behind in 18th and Brett in 28th. Adrian Bellew came 9th in the Vet Category.
Josh moved up category to ride in the Youth with an extra lap and placed 14th. Mike and Sam in the Juvenille came 6th and 10th consecutively.
All in all a good performance from the dirty jo team and again all keen to improve on results for the next round on March 12th.
Hope to see you there Jodi.10/02/2006

We should have the Bikes section up soon so I can get the new o6 Bikes up there.
Also the team section should soon follow that, as it is the third round of the soggy bottom this Sunday there should be plenty to report about next Monday.
WAYNE...........31/01/2006
We had a team ride yesterday all in new DJ Kit looking smart!
Cracking weather dry and sunny,
we did twenty miles of climbing and descending just to see how everybody was riding.
Most of us seem to be on the road to recovery from either illness or injury. Ashley from a crash on concrete, not good. Brett struggled a little due to a virus hes had and maybe a little too much to eat! The rest of us seem to be riding ok but two weeks time at the next soggy bottom round will see if we are or not.

Here we are again Xmas 2005 been and gone.
Cracking ride in the ice and even snow on the 28th. Like riding in summer, fast and dry no mud.
Well with having a cold no racing for me yesterday. So I had to just play team manager and stand on the side line and shout.
I would just like to say a top ride from Adrian third in the Vet's well done mate.

Updated article 3/1/06
Well what a great day for our Christmas ride it was cold but sunny and dry not a cloud in the sky, where were you all??
There were 8 of us in total, a good bunch.
Great riding conditions really frozen and crispy under tyre, bit icey and dodgy in some places and even a scattering of snow.
We started at the shop and made our way up over pridows bridalway so we could take in the views of the coastline at the same time.
Then climbing up over Sandymouth to Stibb where we then made our way up iron hill and in at the back of stowe woods. After crossing the ford at stowe we climbed up to the dishes at Cleave. Eventually taking us out and around Gooseham looping back to Woodford and stowe.
All in all it was about 35 miles of really enjoyable riding. Once we were warm and with the help of the midday sun it made a great social day out.
Thanks to all that turned up and made the effort to make it a great christmas turkey burner!!03/01/2006

Soggy Bottom Round 2
Results...........
Blessed with another gorgeous sunny dry and amazingly warm day for the 2nd round of the Soggy Bottom, again attracting a great number of racers and spectators.
This time based at the shooting ground of the estate, the lap a fast and furious one of just over 3 miles consisted of one long climb off the start and then some great techy singletrack that seemed to prove trickier the more it was ridden over creating some slippery tree roots and claggy mud.
By the way this is from a spectators eye I should really of got a more detailed lowdown from the guys. They may tell me different especially after several riders looked like they were still recovering from the Christmas indulgences's!!
Hence I was not recovering from this but a chest infection along with a pulled muscle in my back from extreme coughing. Just feeling on the road to recovery and quite envious of the riders as we stood up the first climb watching them race off the start line, Wayne would say otherwise as he stood coughing a lung, so don't think that climb would of been too good for him.
Any way the remainder of the 'dirty jo' team had their team talk from a croaky Wayne and plenty of encouragement along the track!!
Ashley Starr proved his true colours working his way up through the riders in the Masters Category of 5 Laps, placing an overall 16th place. Mark Trewin and Brett Campbell fought the duration playing leader wheel to wheel, finally Brett pulled away from Mark on the last lap placing 20th with Mark not far behing in 22nd.
The star performance for the day was Adrian Bellew who rode with ease and finesse gradually eating up the riders and getting a podium finish of 3rd in the Vet category. And it ain't down to that new bike, afterall you gotta beable to ride it!!
Enjoy your energy bars Adrian.
Great to see the boys again giving it a go, think they've got the bug. Racing in the Juvenile category was Sam Trewin 10th, Mike Garrett 8th and Josh Croxton 7th.
So despite the lack of 'dirty jo' team members this time around the guys held the fought with excellent efforts.
So see you all on February 12th for round 3 fighting fit and totally detoxed from the festivities.07/12/2005

The Cornish winter seems to be here the trails this weekend were certainly wet and muddy. So it looks the 1st round of the soggy bottom XC series will live up to its name.
The new dirty Jo bikes jerseys have been printed up so lets hope the www.dirtyjobikes.co.uk team will perform well.

Sunday November 13th 2005
The crisp sunny dry winters day attracted over 200 riders from all over the country, but it didn't take long to see what sort of conditions they were having to endure as they rode through the arena to start another challenging 3.5 mile off road lap.
The previous couple of weeks poor weather had left its mark and 'Soggy Bottom' as the series is known as was living up to its name.
Wayne had an excellent start in the master category and led the riders out of the arena up the first climb. With a couple of river crossings, several gruelling climbs and some excellent technical wooded sections that became more of a challenge as the laps went on. It was a wheel to wheel battle as Wayne tried to maintain his postion within the top 3 riders over 4 laps. It was tough, muddy but fun, a very close finish overall finishing 3rd.
The other members of the team racing in the master category were Brett who placed a very respectable 19th, Ashley not far behind in 23rd, and Stuart was 34th. Unfortunately Mark had to retire at the end of his 3rd lap due to mechanical problems.
Adrian had a good one in the vet class considering it was his first xc race and came 7th.
And Jodi racing in the Elite women not only came 1st but domineered all ladies categories.
Not forgetting the young up and coming talent, future dirty jo team members Sam and Mike. Who went along to have a go at their first xc race and still came back smiling despite the mud packs!!
So a great start for the first round with our top 3 results of 1st, 3rd and 7th.
Everyone's keen to get out riding ready for the next one in the new year.
Hope to see you there.17/10/2005

Saturday 1st October
A typical morning at Dont Push it, Wayne's surfin the net.
Oh and what has he found.
'The Stinger' Newnham Park, Plymouth.
Sunday 9th October.
XC Run 3 miles, XC Ride 15 miles, XC Run 2 miles.
Its our off season now from training and racing, rest and recooperation.
But what the hell we're always up for a challenge, once a race head always a race head. We'll just go along and have a go for fun.
We can enter in the pairs category Jodi can do the run, and Wayne ride...sorted.
Sunday 9th October....
As I put on my running shoes.... what? running shoes on, and shorts(no padding) , and windstopper, I felt barely dressed.
Stood on the start line without my two wheels was a big concern especially as I ran the 3 mile off road lap that I would normally be riding.
I started to question my sanity as my feet led the way picking the lines and jumping the tree roots as I would of done on my kona.
Every climb I felt my poor little legs wouldn't extend any further or get me up there any faster, I had no saddle to get out of to push out the effort. I just kept focusing on the rider, I mean runner in front of me and tried to close the gap, eventually passing on a bit of tight single track, reminding myself again I was running and not riding as I warned him I was passing on his right.
I think the downhills were as bad as the ups, trying to control the leg speed and correct landing of my feet on the off road terrain was hard.
It was great to pass over to Wayne who was then going to endure the off road 15 mile race, the 3 miles I had run 5 times.
But then it didn't feel so good the quads were instantly tight. I tried to keep the legs limbered and muscles warm as I laughed and joked with my fellow rivals.
The time soon went as I watched Wayne blist through the arena to complete his last lap. Now taking first in the ride in the pairs.
Oh god, first, the pressure is really on now, I am no runner. As I stood in the transition area eagerly awaiting Wayne's return, over hearing the horrendous horror stories of the final 2 mile 'stinger' run.
He almost bowled me over as he franticly tagged me bike and all. I sprinted off, but not for long as I reached the first river crossing. I couldn't get any momentum this time as no sooner had I found my foot in the bog I lost another in a pit. Am I suppose to run up that, clambering to stand up right again. I felt I was in some sort of horror movie as I ran through the woodland sweating, looking over my shoulder following the random arrows pinned on the trees. I don't think my ankles could of put up with many more surprises.
It was great to come back in to the arena, and of course maintain first.
We came first!! It wasn't so bad afterall. Think I'll stick to the bike in future, but then again we can always do the Stinger again next year, and I'll do the run!!

XC Racing is a big part of 'Dont Push It'. Wayne and Jodi have have been racing for several years now. Travelling up and down the Country taking part in the National Points and South of England Series.
Jodi's Racing career started in the Sport class, and she soon worked her way up the categories to now be an Elite.
Wayne competes in the Masters category of which he swares is getting harder. But has enjoyed a good season this year and feels he is making good progress.05/10/2005
Jodi and I have just returned from a bit of a road trip. A weeks trail riding in north Wales and Scotland.
I will add an article later in the week but I have a lot to catch up on at the shop first.09/09/2005
Well Bude has gone quieter and we've got the town back to ourselves and the trail's.
September is a good time to ride.
The Trails are nice and dry still so we can go out and hammer them in peace.09/09/2005
'Sleepless' was the event we were all most looking forward to this season. It was the first time we had all ridden as a team. And the biggest event Mike, Stuart and Brett had ever done. So it was to be a challenge and we went with the attitude of just enjoying the weekend.
We set off at five o'clock Saturday morning. We had decided a good nights sleep in our own bed, and on the road early was the way to go. We arrived at Catton at about 10am, as we were guests of Kona we got a great camping spot near the start/finsh area.
We unpacked and set up camp, everything bar the kitchen sink.
Many a eyes were scanning the skies and keeping fingers crossed that the weather would stay fine.
After chatting to a couple of guys to get the latest on the lap, we all decided being a short 6.9 mile course we'd have a practice run!! Afterall we were only gonna be riding it for the next 24 hours. Our backs had had enough after the one, it was extrememly dry and rutty over grass fields, some good climbs and fast flowing single track.
Wayne armed with clip board and pencil tried mustering up a plan of action. The only conclusion was that Jodi was to do the 'les man' running start and the first 2 laps.
By the time Wayne had counted out the 76 scoops of maxim into the barrel mixed with water, it was time for the 2pm mass start.
After a frantic couple of laps riders began to spread out, making the singletrack more fun to ride.
Our team continued a ride pattern of 2 laps each to enable us all to have longer rests.
It stayed fine and dry but as dusk fell so did the temperature along with heavy damp mist.
The course was soon to change not only becoming more technical in the dark with the HID's blazing the way, but also extremely slippery.
The first acknowlegement of this was as Wayne's mobile rang as he was trying to grab a bit of shut eye in the back of the van. It was Stuart on his first lap in the dark, a rider had wiped out in front of him only to bring him down badly with a severe shoulder injury.
Mike came a muttering from the timing tent in the early hours of the morning only to inform us that we were in 13th place out of 71 mixed teams.
The pressure was now on.
Jodi was to be the next one on call, with a small fall herself otherwise things were going well.
Until Jodi and Wayne both decided to have a lye down in the back of the van pulling the back doors closed with keys in hand, only to hear the central locking kicking in!! So after banging on the side of the van and shouting for a bit they managed to find a mobile to contact Brett to find Jodi's spare keys and release them.
Oh yeah and after that another phone call from Mike who's lights had run out of charge, therefore Wayne had to franticly get the lycra back on to take over.
Auntie Margs' pasties had worked a treat for Brett, but by 3am as he crawled from his tent, even he didn't feel as 'ace' as he had done after his first!
We did warn him.
Tired, aching muscles, saddle sore and stomachs stacked with carbs, we weren't feeling our greatest.
But as the new day rose so did the spirits, as riders rode in the early morning red sky, wind drying underfoot, the trails were a real treat.
This still didn't hide the fact that there were several hours until 2pm. We then went on to single laps to keep the pace up knowing we were now pushing up the placements to a possible 12th.
I am sure we all had the same thoughts at that time, hoping the rider before us would take a little longer so we had more time to mull around our camp, and devour another breakfast bap.
Who was to do the last lap, well if our calculations were to be correct theres time to get 2 more in.
It could make all the difference to the final results, afterall its only for fun!'.
Jodi hammered her last lap passing the looters laying in the afternoon sun, waiting to roll into the arena for 2, content with the amount they had done.
No such story, christ theres still 10 minutes to go, go for it Wayne get another one in.
So there it was 'sleepless in the saddle' it was, and a mere 2 minutes behind 10th place.
It didn't take us long to start discussing next year, even Stuart as he stood nursing his shoulder.
